Simply a 100 watt panel connected directly (no control system at all) to a 12 V 56 amp hr lead acid battery, then connected via just an on/ off switch to a fan rated at 15 watts 12 V. It will 'work' (I have seen one working), but will it just sooner or later 'cook' the battery?

Yes sooner than later you will cook that battery from over charging. My 10 amp automatic battery charger will boil a full-sized truck battery if left on long enough. Your 100 watt panel divided by 12 volts equals 8.333 amps. __________________ Gordy, Minnesota

Very definitely it will cook the battery, as Gordy said, "sooner than later". Get a charge controller, you can find them on Ebay for less than the price of a new battery.

It would cook the battery. You can get a PWM charge controller off eBay for the price of a Starbucks Coffee.
