I was wondering if I build a 5000 gallon tank on m basement made hot water, if unused till winter would it stay hot if insulated with 12" of styrafoam or the extruded panels all 6 sides

You should be able to calculate the heat loss give the dimensions and R value if the insulation following heat loss calculations on the web

This was the calculation for a 2500 gal tank for heat storage when sky was cloudy for 4 days, but it should give you some ideas in the calculations necessary.
