My wife of 43 plus years passed away from cancer in 2002. Shortly thereafter, my daughter bought me my first ever pedigreed cat, a black and grey Persian kitten which I named Gizmo because she somewhat resembled that TV movie character.
Giz was my lap cat and buddy. She was always affectionate and would climb into my lap and purr like a broken outboard motor while I watched tv on the sofa. At night, she would either climb under the covers with me or sit at the head of the bed and watch over me. I've heard the saying 'that real men don't have cats' but that's pure BS! Giz was my constant companion, and a week or so ago, she was sick so I took her to the vet. The diagnosis was lung cancer and a sure death within a couple of weeks. Damn! Damn! Damn! I didn't want her to suffer so I went to the vet this morning and held her in my arms while the 'final needle' was administered. She died in my arms while I was saying goodbye and, God!, it was hard. I'm 84 and a tough old ex GI with a lot of kills to my credit but I cried like a baby when my companion left me. This, on the 29th of December, follows Xmas day when another favorite car, a huge orange and white tabby, also died. This has not been my best Xmas and New Years.....! What to do now? I guess I'll hit the local animal shelters and rescue a couple of cats. Not kittens but mature cats who've been mistreated or cast out. For years I've fed and watered a colony of feral cats, from a few to 12 or more, on my back veranda. What the heck. Might as well take a couple more into my home where I know they're safe, warm, well fed, and cared for. GOM, Grumpy Old Man and an animal lover.....

GOM That's hard, I lost my English Springer Spaniel, Carmichael on Boxing day 4 years ago, still fresh in my mind. Good on you to help those cats, there sure are a load of them in need out there.

Sad, I know how you feel. I lost my dogs, in 2017 and 2018. They were each 17. One had been my best friend for 14 years. I miss 'em.

Sad to hear but sounds like you will have a few more friends soon.
We feel the same about our cat. Part of the family for sure. God bless. __________________ Bert K. Michigan

Sorry for your loss! Our pets (2 dogs and 1 cat) are like children to us as well. It's never easy when one dies.
God bless you and thank you for serving our country! Gary Z So Central TX
