My reflector is currently covered with heat shrink plastic. However I think I would cover the mylar  with thin acrylic, sealed on the edges with silicone. I've brushed off snow which plastic didn't handle well.

As for longevity, I've used mylar on my parabolic trough for years. It's never spotted or degraded that I've seen. My parabolic panel also has thin acrylic for glazing. I place the glazing on to keep snow/ice from accumulating in the trough.

I think reflectors has merit though.
