Filtering nonsense readings from your sensors in software is a good idea even if the hardware is well behaved. But, don't use that to cover up a known hardware problem. Fix the hardware. You can add a filter and generally it's best to place it as close to the source of the noise as possible to minimise the amount of wiring that can radiate the noise. I wouldn't stop there though, I would also add a bunch of capacitance very near the input to the Arduino.

Thanks LAT39, I had a big electrolytic capacitor a year ago before I installed the battery, but took it off during the summer for some reason and now can't find it. When I do it'll get reinstalled. It helped start the pump, too.

Finding a filter these days is easier said than done. The auto places don't stock them any more and neither does Walmart. Radio shack is history. Found a couple on Amazon, but they haven't come in yet. For the moment, I've disconnected the charge controller and replaced it with an adjustable buck converter set at 13.7v. So far it seems to be working well, though I don't know how well it will maintain the small AGM battery over time.

Installed the auto noise filter today and it appears to be working.  At least no garbage on my display. "Boss" auto noise filter from Amazon.

That was yesterday. Today, no go. The garbage is gone but the system goes down when the pump comes on. It runs fine off just the battery, so it's not that. More tests, i guess.
