My neighbor recently purchased a gate opener  with a 24v DV motor/actuator and has asked for advice on solar charging the batteries. At this point I don't have an estimate for power consumption per opening or number of openings per day so can't estimate  the battery capacity, but he keeps asking if various solar chargers he finds on ebay etc would work.

Can anyone please point me at a site with 24v PV charging systems in various capacities whose products they have found reliable, or, suggest where I might start?

Thanks,

sundug

Most I see are 10-30 watt, I'd err larger than smaller. Doug

Thanks Doug, I will take a look at it, and yes I agree that 30 w gives a better margin especially up here in Canada.

2-12v panels in series will also work, and most of the inexpensive controllers also work with 24v.  I'll not try to estimate size, but I agree that if in doubt, go bigger.

Thanks stmbtwle.. Yes, a couple of 12v panels in series, he can add another 2 later in parallel if the limited sun exposure doesn't generate enough to keep the batteries charged.
