Following the good success I had with my solar projects up to this point, I decided to get serious and build big - a 24' X 8' pex / aluminum serpentine collector at the tree line of our back yard!

I understand soldering is easy to learn, but I've never done it myself, so I decided to use pex tubing instead.  It connects with push on sharkbite fittings which makes it very easy for a DIY challenged guy like me as no soldering is required at all!

This design works but my CPVC design is working even better.  The CPVC design has much lower flow resistance too.

A few questions:
  • How much pex is in the collector itself? (Not including the underground portion). I know you listed 300' total, but how much in just the collector (rough guesstimate)?
  • Did you ever run the 'extra' PEX thru the collector? If so, what did you notice?
  • It may have been in the original post, but what pump/flow rate are you running?

Hi,

I have about 300' in the collector itself.  I haven't run additional pex through it.  My flow rate is only a gallon a minute, due to my nearly 700' round trip at only 1/2".  I definitely should have used a larger diameter out and back.

Hi Scott, I watched the video and thank you so much for helping me know there is a PEX method. I was wondering what size pex 1/2? I was also wondering if the pump was a 12 volt PV pump or are they too weak to do the job.

Scott you gave me a thought comparing pex with cpvc. Suppose instead of one long "serpent" you had several shorter ones in parallel? You'd have better flow, and keep most of the ease of construction.

Hi Randall,

I used 1/2 inch pex.

Willie, I considered that and I think it would be more efficient too, but the Ts for the pex make it a more expensive approach than CPVC.

Yeah those Sharkbites are pricey! But depending on the number of serpents you wouldn't need many.
