So very new to this and wanted to do some DIY solar projects with my daughter.  My first project I want to do is a solar cellphone charger and, from plans I found around the net, have most of the info but have a question on the solar cells themselves.

Most of the projects out there suggest buying a 4v (60mah) solar panel but I have some .5Vmax / 3.6Imax cells that I would like to make into a little panel of my own.  Problem is the cells are a bit larger and wiring 8 of these to get to 4v would make for a not very portable panel (also 3.6Imax seems more than I need).  So I guess my question is if there is a circuit that I could use to step up my voltage and step down my current?  Thanks for any help you can!

I'd try to cut one into 8 smaller cells and connect them in series.

Solar is like the wind. It may be free, but putting it to work isn't!

Solar panel, working with cells is a fun project. I soldered 70+ as a project today.

They are the most fragile thing I've ever seen or handled.

Cutting to size would allow you to fit the cells into the size you prefer. Betting several will crack, break into pieces. Like I said, VERY FRAGILE.

Speaking frankly, solar hot air panels is very easy & cheap for a project.
