Yes they could possibly work.

I can see how the limit switches would stop it. The creative part would be how to reverse it once the connection is cut.

May have to run 4 wires instead of two.  Have the polarities reverse. Have one micro switch for each pair.
That way the opposite pair of wires from the open set will always be closed waiting for the controller to supply the current.
YIKES!

or is there a simpler way?

Bert,

A few more ideas here (courtesy of Your TorqueTubes videos...)...

What are you using to control this critter?

You could use a DPDT relay, so that when the relay is pulled in the polarity is one way, and when the relay is off the polarity is the other.  Problem is that there is no OFF.  Limit switches would fix that though. With a couple diodes in the circuit you could get away with only two wires after the  relay.

Just thinking, you can get 12v motorized valves on Ebay, might be able to take the motor off one and use it.  Limit switches and reversing are built in already.

Bert, you wrote "I want to route the output to another room." so you actually need 2 dampers, one closes, the other opens..Yes? No?

Lots of good ideas.
I'm using this controller to control the fans.

Dampers could be hooked up to it I think.

Yes I would need two dampers coming off a Y pipe. One to each room.

It could work. Depending on how sophisticated you want to get you might be able to use one actuator for both.

I agree with stmbtwle , a single motor driving two dampers in two ducts with their blades at 90 degs to each other would open one, close the other.. So rather than a 'Y' layout you could do the 'Y' to split the first duct then with 2 45s create two parallel ducts with a common shaft running through both. Heading to bed now will look at grizzlycontrols in the am..

A different option, instead of two dampers (and a fan), you use a fan with a cloth non-return flapper in each duct.  Simply turn on the fan you want.  No linkages, no moving parts other than the fans themselves. It's simple, but depending on the cost of the fans....
