I got a couple sheets of damaged 1.55" foil faced polyiso today at Menards for $1 each (regular price $39.99).  If your local hardware store has a clearance area it is something to watch for.  Or if you see a damaged sheet in the regular pile and don't need the full sheet to be perfect, ask for a discount.  A damaged sheet could be cut up for the side insulation in a collector.

I'm using some of it in the basement.  There is a small area between the studs just above the foundation that currently just has one layer of polyiso.  The rest I'll save for a future build or maybe use it in a new air exchanger preheater.

Is this the polyiso you got for a buck?

http://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/insulation/insulation-panels/johns-manville-ci-max-reg-r-9-6-1-55-x-4-x-8-polyiso-foam-insulation/p-1444438920508-c-5779.htm?tid=6345077502476237983

That's the one with the heavy foil thermal barrier on both sides. I wish it came in a 1" thickness. There is a $4 rebate per sheet from the state AND Menards 11% rebate. So in other words, You are getting more than 4 times the amount you paid in rebates. Slick deal!!!

Yes, that's it.  Foil on both sides (heavier than the thinner sheets).  I didn't know there was a state rebate.  Where is it?

At the Menards I go to there is a clearance area by the indoor lumber where they put the damaged 4x8 sheets of plywood and other materials.  Never really paid attention to it until seeing the polyiso there.  They originally tried to get $14.99 out of it before knocking it down to $1.

On the right hand side of the page link I sent you there is information about the rebate. i remember getting a state rebate when I added 1" of polyiso to the exterior of my house before installing the siding. I think I purchased about 40 sheets of the polyiso, some of which were for my early collectors. i know I got a rebate, AND I think I was able to use the purchase for a tax credit too.

The heavy foil wouldn't need a protective covering.
