Build two series strings of 3 8V batteries to get 24V.
Tie the two strings together at the ends of the strings, Postive to Postive, Negtive to Negtive
Connect the load to the ends of the strings.

This simplified drawing shows 4 six volt batteries in series for 24 volts. If you want to use 3 eight volt batteries just eliminate one of the boxes that represents the batteries.
The two open connections are where your power leads need to connect.

How about posting a diagram of how you are wiring the six 8 volt batteries into a battery bank.
If you need something to do draw the diagram, TinyCAD is free. TinyCAD is what I used to draw the schematic I posted.

Three strings of two series (16V .. 2V, 3A) rather the two strings of three series (24V... 3V,2A).
