I have a small sailboat with a normal 12V electrical system and a single 40-50W solar panel with a basic regulator. I'm considering replacing the inboard diesel engine with an electrical motor and the option I'm considering uses 48V battery banks. I still need a 12V system onboard for lights and navigation, but I'm curious if there is an type of regulator that allows me to utilize the solar panel I have to add some minor charge to the 48V bank, and power the 12V system with a regular DC-DC converter?

Any ideas or tips?

I realize a 50W panel is probably very small, but the boat isn't used very frequently and I assume it could at least make some difference.
